Our Learning
Summer
Maths
In our Maths lessons, we will be learning about fractions where we will be developing our understanding of the purpose of the numerator and denominator. We will also be investigating equivalent fractions as well as adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. Next, we will learn about a range of measures - we will investigate mass and capacity, money, time and shape.
English
This term in English, we will be reading ‘The Enchanted Wood’ and ‘The Iron Giant’ and our written pieces will be based around these texts. Alongside our work on our class novels, we will continue to practise our comprehension skills. Our class text this term is ‘Stig of the Dump’ which we will use to develop our reading fluency and comprehension skills. We will also practise our handwriting skills and improve our grammar as well as practising a new spelling rule each week.
Reading
Our text this term is ‘Stig of the Dump’. We will also practise our handwriting skills and improve our grammar. During our lessons, children will be using dictionaries to find the definitions of new and unfamiliar vocabulary. All the children will take part in a shared read to discuss what they have read before going onto answering VIPERS comprehension questions about each chapter.
Science
During the first half term, we will focus on the topic ‘Plants’ . When learning about plants, we will identify the conditions which plants require in order to grow well.
During the second half term, we will focus on the topic 'Light’. When studying light, we will learn about sources of light, where shadows come the amount of light entering a space
As a part of each topic, we will carry out a number of investigations and use our Scientific knowledge to make predictions and interpret results.
History
In our History lessons this term, we hope to answer the question ‘Why did the Romans invade and settle in Britain? We will focus on making inferences and deductions from primary and secondary sources to identify the impact of the Roman Empire on our country.
Geography
In our Geography lessons this term, we hope to answer the question ‘Are all settlements the same?’ Our learning will look at the differences between villages, towns and cities in the UK. We will use OS maps to identify human and physical features of each type of settlement. We will then expand our focus by looking at the city of New Delhi and identifying the human and physical features before comparing the way that land is used in that city with how we use land in our local area.
Art
This half-term, we will be using the knowledge of ancient Egypt which we gained in spring term to develop our own ancient Egyptian scrolls.
DT
In DT, we will be undertaking two projects. We will be researching, designing and constructing a castle. Then, as we enjoyed studying ancient Egypt so much, we will design and stitch a collar inspired by those worn in ancient Egypt.
Music
In music, we will continue to learn to play the trumpet! We will be visited by Mr Bates every Monday throughout the year when we will be learning to read music, as well as perform in front of audiences.
PE
In PE, we will be focusing on rounders and cricket. We will be following on from what we learnt last half-term and developing our skills of ball control and team work.
Computing
We will begin the term by looking at computer programming using the online programme 'Scratch'. We will learn how to arrange blocks of code in order to control an on screen avatar. We will also identify and correct programming 'bugs'. Then, we will explore how to keep ourselves and others safe whilst being online. Next, we will learn about the purpose of computer parts and the inside of a laptop.
French
This term, we will be learning the words for numbers 1-12. We will then expand our vocabulary by learning phrases which enable us to ask and answer questions about our ages.
RE
In the first half–term, we will be learning about the values of Humanists and Christians.
During the second half-term, we will be looking at Judaism and how festivals and family life show what matters to Jewish people.
PSHE
Our PSHE theme during the first half-term will be ‘Relationships', where we will discuss things that we appreciate about our friends and family. We will also share our ideas about how we depend on others and how they depend on us.
During the second half-term, our theme will be 'Changing Me'. Here, we will discuss how animals and humans change on the inside as well as on the outside.
Look what we have been doing...
History Showcase
On the afternoons of 5th and 6th December, we invited parents and carers into school to look at, and hear about, our amazing history learning.
This half-term we have been focussing on the Stone Age! The children had an incredible time learning more about the Stone Age on our workshop day by becoming archaeologists, studying artefacts and experiencing how Stone Age people lived.
The children have also been using their historical knowledge of the Stone Age to inspire their art projects! Over a number of weeks, the children have been using their sketchbooks to build on their sketching and painting skills in order to create their own Stone Age-style cave painting. Using cardboard, natural paints, couscous and lentils, they created some excellent masterpieces!
