Art and Design

Purpose of Study

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

School Vision

Our Art and Design curriculum provides learning opportunities for pupils to explore a wide range of artistic styles and experience a wide range of techniques including: drawing, sketching, painting, collage and sculpture. Drawing and painting are prioritised and children will be taught through thematic topics where appropriate. Art Portfolios and sketch books are used and children are taught to be reflective and critical. There is a focus on the work of notable artists and children are taught to appreciate the life and works of notable artists, craftmakers, designers architects and designers through history.

We teach our pupils to:

  • Be confident, have a go and persevere when faced with challenges.
  • Develop ideas,  be creative and express themselves creatively using a range of media.
  •  Be critical and resilient as they learn to develop and refine their work.

  • Be proud of achievements and contribute to displays and showcases.

To help us achieve this we:

  • Provide an interesting and varied curriculum that develops curious and ambitious mind.
  • Give opportunities for children to flourish and demonstrate their talents and imagination.
  • Provide activities that stimulate excitement and enjoyment.
  • Draw upon the work of great and notable artists.

  • Encourage a global appreciation of all art forms.

  • Provide a huge range of resources for children to experiment with using.

What our pupils think...

"I like looking at the work of different artists and using that to inspire my art. We used the work of Wassily Kandinsky to inspire our paintings of a toucan".
