Our learning

Autumn
Maths

In our Maths lessons, we will be covering the following areas: place value, adding and subtracting numbers, and multiplication and division. We will develop our conceptual understanding of mathematics by using concrete objects, pictorial representations and abstract thinking throughout each topic that we cover.

We will also work on securing quick recall of the times tables. Please encourage your child to practise these at home.

English

During the first half term, we will be working with the Roald Dahl book ‘The Twits’.  We will use this text as inspiration for our own writing and will complete both a character description and a persuasive letter.  During the second half term, we will be reading ‘The Polar Express’ and writing in a variety of genres in response to this text.

Reading

Our guided reading text this term is 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl. We will study a chapter every week and from time to time, we will use film to enhance our learning.  Our reading focus this term will be on making inferences based on a character’s actions and thoughts and on making predictions based on the text.

Throughout the term, we will also be reading a range of non-fiction texts, focusing on the features and structure.

Science

During the first half term, our topic will be Animals Including Humans. The children will learn about the digestive system, describing what happens in each part. They will also learn about the four types of teeth and their functions. In the second half of the term, we will investigate Electricity.  We will look at how electricity is conducted as well as the materials which insulate and keep us safe from the current.

History

In History, we will be learning about the Anglo Saxons. The children will suggest reasons for the Anglo-Saxons invasion of Britain, make inference about artefacts and describe how Anglo-Saxon beliefs changed. The children will also explain the threat the Vikings posed to the Anglo-Saxons.

Geography

In Geography, we will look at why the rainforest is important to us. We will identify the location and key features of the Amazon rainforest is and look at ways the indigenous peoples use the Amazon’s resources.

Art

In Art, we will look at tone and texture through our drawing and use these to create 3D-looking pieces.  We will also explore how to create tints and shades in order to create different effects with paint.  We will explore proportion and composition along with a variety of painting techniques before undertaking our final piece.

DT

In DT, we will be

PE

Our PE lessons are on Tuesdays.  This term, the children will learn the skills of blocking and intercepting, passing and moving the ball to set up attacks alongside the rules of handball. Our second topic will be gymnastics, in which we will learn to become increasingly competent and confident to perform skills more consistently, perform in time with a partner and group and use compositional ideas in sequences.

Computing

During this term, we will build on the coding skills we learnt last year.  We will use the Scratch programme to code a computer game, incorporating 'if' statements, variables and sensors.

French

In French, we will continue to develop our vocabulary and grammatical understanding of the language by learning how to describe appearance, understanding how adjectives change depending on whether we are describing a girl or a boy.

RE

This term, we will be learning about Christianity and what Jesus wanted in the world. We will be looking at texts from the bible and comparing these.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be thinking about how we can make healthy choices to be a healthier, happier person.
