Our learning

Autumn term

Maths

In Maths, we will be covering a range of areas, including place value, ordering numbers, counting, estimating, addition and subtraction. We will also develop our problem-solving skills each week and continue to practise our times tables to build confidence and fluency with number facts.

English

In English, we will be reading a variety of texts, with our writing activities based around these. Alongside our class novels, we will continue to develop our comprehension, handwriting, spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation skills.

We will also explore a range of different text types, including poetry, instructions and play scripts. Our first text will be ‘It Was a Dark and Stormy Night.’ Throughout the term, we will continue to develop the children's spelling, punctuation and grammar skills while also focusing on handwriting and the presentation of their work.

Reading

During Guided Reading, the children will work in different groups to develop their reading fluency, comprehension and discussion skills. Some children will be reading ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl with Mr Cole, while others will work with Miss Bailey and Mrs Wright in smaller guided-reading groups. These groups will explore a different text each week, giving the children opportunities to develop a range of reading skills.

Science

During the first half term, our Science topic will be Rocks and Soils. The children will learn to compare and group different types of rocks based on their appearance and physical properties. They will also learn how fossils are formed and begin to recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

Throughout the topic, the children will continue to develop their understanding of different types of scientific enquiry and have opportunities to carry out their own investigations.

History

This term, our History topic will be Prehistory, focusing on the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

We will find out how people lived during these periods, explore the types of dwellings they lived in and investigate how trade developed over time.

Throughout the topic, we will consider the question: Would we rather live in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age?

Geography

In Geography, we will be learning about Antarctica and exploring who and what lives there.

We will focus on climate, latitude and longitude and compare the climate of Antarctica with that of the UK. We will also research Ernest Shackleton and his famous expedition, learning about the challenges he and his crew faced and the outcome of their journey.

Art

In Art, we will be creating prehistoric-inspired artwork to complement our History topic.

We will experiment with paint, exploring how colours can be mixed and used to add detail to our artwork. We will take inspiration from prehistoric art and develop our own creative ideas.

Music

We have an exciting opportunity to learn to play the trumpet!

A music teacher will visit us every Monday throughout the year. During these lessons, the children will learn how to read music and develop their musical skills, as well as having opportunities to perform in front of others.

PE

This term, we will be learning gymnastics with Mr Bennett, our PE teacher.

The children will learn how to create and hold a range of balances before combining movements to create sequences. In Dance, they will develop movement phrases and put these together to create performances.

Computing

In Computing, we will begin by practising how to log on to and use our laptops independently. We will also recap our understanding of e-safety, making sure that we know how to stay safe online and what to do if we ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe when using technology.

French

In French, our first topic will focus on greetings. The children will learn how to say a number of key phrases and, by the end of the topic, will be able to ask others their name and how they are.

Religious Education

Our focus in RE this term will be Christianity. We will explore the Christian 'Big Story' and read and discuss a range of texts from the Old Testament.
