Music

Purpose of Study

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

School Vision

At Burnt Tree we provide a music curriculum that is progressive, builds on previous learning and utilises high quality specialist teachers and resources. We promote a love of music and singing across a broad curriculum and learn to both appreciate great artists composers and musicians of the world and be critical through discussion. We provide opportunities to learn about music in all its forms – to enjoy the opportunity to make music, listen to and appreciate it and understand the specialist aspects of it – its language, its patterns and its notation.

We teach our pupils to:

  •  Love music and develop an appreciation of different music forms.

  • Listen to the works of notable composers and musicians and expose them to the best of what has been seen and done in the music world.

  • Develop confidence, enjoy performing together, and to see the links between music and performance across the Arts.

  • Use their voices, play tuned and untuned instruments and develop an understanding of musical notation.

  • Have fun, be creative, experiment, improvise create, select and combine sounds.

To help us achieve this we:

  • Utilise specialist teachers who deliver high quality lessons across school that allow the children to explore their musical capability and allow teachers to gain important CPD.

  • Encourage children to be critical when appraising music from different genres, different periods in history and artists that reflect the local area and community.

  • Provide regular opportunities for all children to be involved in performances assemblies and special events which will involve the wider school community

  • Provide opportunities for children to hear live music both onsite and as part of trips and visits.

ADDITIONAL MUSIC PROVISION

We provide a broad range of musical activities that enable children to appreciate the dynamics of a variety of music.

EARLY YEARS

Children in Early Years ( Nursery and reception classes ) take part in weekly music lessons provided by an outside specialist. There is also an opportunity for a limited number of children in Reception and year 1 classes to attend a Music After School club for a small cost.

KEY STAGE 2

YEAR 3

Children in Year 3 take part in the wider opportunities for all music provision provided by Sandwell Music and Arts Service.  All children learn how to play a brass instrument which is currently the trumpet.  Children develop the skill to play a brass instrument, produce sounds, they develop their musical knowledge, how to read music and to play an instrument as part of a group.

YEARS 4-6

Following year 3 brass lessons, children have the opportunity to continue brass lessons in small focused groups for a cost of £25 per term.  The cost includes a weekly lesson and the loan of a brass instrument which they take home to practise. As children progress, they are able to take grade examinations on their instrument, and they have the opportunity to join one of the Sandwell bands or ensembles once they reach the required standard.

School Choir

We have a Key Stage 1 and a Key Stage 2 choir who rehearse once a week during lunchtime. They perform at concerts/assemblies in school and at a concert for their parents each term. These children also have the opportunity to perform at various events, including Sandwell music events at West Bromwich Town Hall, a local Salvation Army, at supermarkets and in local venues.  KS2 have also taken part in the Christmas choir competition in Merry Hill which they have successfully won on two occasions.
