Our learning

Autumn term
Maths

In our Maths lessons, we will be covering the following areas: place value, adding and subtracting numbers, and multiplication and division. We will develop our conceptual understanding of mathematics by using concrete objects, pictorial representations and abstract thinking throughout each topic that we cover.

We will also be working on learning the times-tables securely.

English

During the first half term, we will focus on developing our understanding of grammar.  Alongside this, we will develop a range of interesting and engaging   sentences based on a short story called ‘Reverso’, which we will then fashion into a character description.  During the second half term, we will be reading ‘The Polar Express’ and writing in a variety of genres in response to this text.

Over the term, we will be learning key spelling rules linked to Spelling Shed.  We will study a rule every week and then learn words that follow that rule. The games on Spelling Shed really help us to do this!

Reading

Our guided reading text this term is 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl. We will study a chapter every week and from time to time, we will use film to enhance our learning.  Our reading focus this term will be on making inferences based on a character’s actions and thoughts and on making predictions based on the text.

Throughout the term, we will be reading a range of non-fiction texts, focusing on the features and structure.

Science

During the first half term, our topic will be Animals Including Humans. The children will learn about the digestive system, describing what happens in each part. They will also learn about the four types of teeth and their functions.

After half term, our topic will be Living Things and Their Habitats. Here the children will learn about living things in a range of habitats and the key features that helped them to identify them.

History

In History, we will be learning about the Anglo Saxons. The children will suggest reasons for the Anglo-Saxons invasion of Britain, make inference about artefacts and describe how Anglo-Saxon beliefs changed.

The children will also explain the threat the Vikings posed to the Anglo-Saxons.

Geography

In Geography, we will look at why the rainforest is important to us. We will identify the location and key features of the Amazon rainforest is and look at ways the indigenous peoples use the Amazon’s resources.

Art

In Art, the children will explore different methods of drawing, including 'drawing with scissors'.  They will create collages then draw an element of their collage into a wax resist.

During our painting unit, the children will learn more about shades and tints. They will also develop their skills in printmaking , photography and mixed media work.

DT

In DT, the children will research, design and make their own book sleeve.  They will identify the features, benefits and disadvantages of a range of fasteners then decide which they will use to keep their book safe.  The children will then follow an agreed design criteria to create a template and sew their book sleeve.

PE

Our PE lessons are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Our topic this term is Badminton and Volleyball. In badminton, children will develop their skills with a racquet and learn the basic passes and serves before putting these into practise in rallies and full games.  In volleyball, they will work on controlling the ball with their hands and passing accurately before developing their skills when playing the game.

Computing

During this term, the children will focus on online safety.  We will look at how search engines filter the information they present to us and develop an analytical eye when deciding on the reliability of search results.

French

In French, children will develop their vocabulary by learning adjectives to describe a person's appearance.  They will also continue to learn about the language gender rules which differ when describing a boy or girl.  In addition, the children will compose spoken sentences to describe their friends.

RE

This term, we will focus on Christianity and the question 'what kind of world did Jesus want?'  During this enquiry, the children will learn about a range of Bible stories such as The Good Samaritan in order to help us answer other enquiry question.

The children will continue to learn about Christianity in Autumn two, with a focus on the Pentecost.

PSHE

During the first half-term, our topic will be ‘Being Me in My World’. Here, the children will talk about how our attitudes and actions make a different to our class team.  We will also look at articles 12 and 28 of the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child and talk about how these work within the classroom.

After the half-term, our topic will be ‘Celebrating Difference’. The children will discuss how we make assumptions about people based on the way they look.  During this topic, we will also address the issue of bullying and discuss how this is sometimes hard to spot as well as what to do if you think bullying is going on.

Look what we have been doing...

History Showcase

On the afternoons of 5th and 6th December, we invited parents and carers into school to look at, and hear about, our amazing History learning.

  Art

In Art, we have been learning to develop our drawing skills. We used several pencil tones when shading to create a simple 3D effect. We also used charcoal and rubber to show areas of light and dark in our drawings. We have also learnt to use different tools to create marks and patterns by scratching into painted surface.

  Maths
